Hey, I’m Jerene

I am a retired Art teacher who is now totally enjoying time in my studio. I create hand built pottery bowls, platters, and large pots and fused glass utilitarian and decorative pieces.

My life has been from the Sandhills to the northeast central farm land of Nebraska. Flower gardening and watching sunsets are a favorite of mine. Teaching Art from PreK to 12th grade through my 28 years where I tried to make a difference for my students but now I am in my studio learning about the infinite possibilities of clay and fused glass. Exhibiting artwork at Noyes Gallery in Lincoln, Nebraska throughout my teaching years was important to me as an artist. I presently exhibit and sell my work at Red Path Gallery in Seward, Nebraska and Studio 10 in Grand Island, Nebraska. I also host Unique Boutique at my residence the first Thursday of December each year with nine other artists.

How I navigate projects

MY PROCESS

Clay—A mid range clay is used for slab and coil construction. I start with a base then build upwards. Sometimes if it is a large structure I begin upside down then when the clay is at the leather hard stage I turn it right side up and add pieces of slabs or coils. I use cone flower petals and leaves for a lot of my creations. I take the flower apart and use a small rolling pin to press the petals in the clay. The same process is used for leaves. I also like adding dill stems and other plant leaves. After the piece is dry it is fired in an electric kiln. The bisque load is fired at Cone 04—1945 degrees and the glaze firing at Cone 5 or 6 —2167 to 2232 degrees. Fused Glass—I use Coe 96 glass for all my creations. I decide on my design and create the dish or platter using a clear piece on the bottom and other cut pieces from the various colored opaque or transparent glass for the top. They are lightly glued together with a drop of hair spray then fired using a specific schedule in the electric kiln. A full fuse is reached at 1460 degrees while a contour (leaving texture) is fired to 1370 degrees. The piece is cleaned then placed back in the kiln at 1225-1235 degrees to slump down into a mold. The landscape glass is made of three layers of glass for a look of distance. Murine (glass flowers and leaves) are added for texture and a highlight of fun.

Inspiration

Nature is central to my work, which is influenced by my rural surroundings. I grew up on a ranch in the Nebraska Sandhills and have lived my adult life on a farm in Northeast/Central Nebraska.

Craft & Design

My work consists of pottery bowls and large pots along with fused glass. Designs vary on the client and the inspiration.
